Abstract
The operative procedure of Modified Tanner Operation for the bleeding esophageal varices is described in detail and its rationale is discussed. The results of this operation performed therapeutically on 12 patients with bleeding esophageal varices are as follows; (1) 1 patient was died three hours after operation; (2) during the follow up period (1 to 3 years) 2 pati-ents were expired due to hepatic failure and renal failure; 7 patients are alive currently; 2 patients were lost to follow up; (3) 7 cases of postoperative esophagograms showed disappearance of varices in 3 cases and improvement in 4; (4) portasystemic encephalopathy as seen frequently after shunts had never occurred; and (5) gastritis, diarrhea, atelectasis, subphrenic abscess and ascites were occasional complications.
